Summer has gone by quickly and now autumn is upon us again. It seems like winter was ending and now it's around the corner. Seasons change so fast.

The summer case load has been fairly normal, which is to say that I have not seen the ocean in over a month. I would like to take the time to visit the coast, take advantage of the weather and sail, but it seems as though my time for such things lessens each year. A casuality of the profession, I suppose.

The newest case, blackmail of a mob related murder, has just hit the news. The press seems to make things ten times more difficult, especially if there is anything associated with the mob in it. We've charged the suspect and made an arrest, but I fear that the charges will be twisted by the media to make him a sympathetic character being blackmailed by a jealous ex-mistress. The public has a right to the facts, untainted and unbiased from the source, not from the diamond-dropping mouths of the networks. My ADAs are being harassed as they leave the office well, more than usual and although calling the television networks might take some of the physical pressure off of my people, it would increase the gossip around the case tenfold. You can never win against reporters.

The coffee shop down the street has put out a pumpkin spice coffee to go with the season. I think it's time for a break.

current mood: working

It has been a quiet spring so far, if you can call prosecuting murderers quiet with minimal drama and media involvement. The weather is getting milder, and it much nicer to walk outside in sunshine at 68 degrees than 20. The most excitement was when the new coffee shop opened at the end of the block Theo decided he wanted to get me a cat. Cats are....odd creatures.

Speaking of Theo and his 'interesting' ideas, he somehow convinced me to venture out with him about a month ago. At the bar we ended up visiting we saw Officer Pierson, which was a surprise, surely to both of us. It was rather enjoyable to speak with him, but I do feel bad that he had to deal with Theo. He can be a bit overwhelming sometimes, but they seemed to hit it off fine.

I suppose I should stop loitering and finish this brief, but I believe that a fresh cup of coffee is in order.

(OOC: Oh wow, Troy is so dull sometimes ^^;; If anyone wants to plot or chat, please drop me a line, he needs something to do other than work, the nerd.)

tired

current mood: tired

The final verdict came down two days ago: guilty. I knew it would happen, the child committed the crime without a question and there was ample forensic evidence to show even the most simple of jurymen. However, even though I know the young man was guilty, I can't help but wonder what his real motivation was in killing his girlfriend and her lover. I tried to find some clue or reason, but after speaking to the detectives and officers associated with the case, and the finally the defendant himself, I was unable to figure out his true motivations. The defence played the mental illness card and the boy was sent off to the state mental institution for the rest of his days. While I agree that this child should receive care for his apparent insanity, I can't help but feel that there was something missing, that I didn't get all the facts. I don't like feeling like I've missed something...

Theo called and said that he is fine, he was staying at a friend's house during the freak blizzard. I'm glad to hear from him, some times his choice of dwellings are not very stable. He also informed me that he was coming to spend a few days here, and drag me out to some random place to 'socialize'... while he looks for his next job. I'm glad that he will be here at the start of my next case and not the end of the last one...Theo tends to be rather distracting.

I need to finish going over these reports before I go home for the night. It's already midnight...thank goodness the trains run all night.

Snow snow snow...

March 9th, 2006 (10:28 pm)
cold

current mood: cold

I think this is the first time I have ever been glad to have been stuck at the office until late at night. I can't believe how much snow has fallen in such a short time. There was a short warning of snow for tonight on the paper this morning but nowhere had it mentioned the blizzard that just rolled in. Since I have a lot of work to do, and they are supposed to hand down the verdict today for that double murder case today, it is most likely a good thing that I am already here to help with the fall out for it (and anything else that will undoubtably come my way during this storm).

I had an interesting conversation with Mr. Silverberg lately. I bumped into him in the hallway outside of my office and we had a talk about some of the political issues that are floating around in the government right now. It wasn't a very intrusive conversation, which is a good thing at this time, but it did confirm some of the things I had heard about him. He is an intelligent man, and it was informative to speak with him, especially since he seemed to understand that I am not a political person at the core. It will be interesting to continue our talk at a later date.

...My goodness, did the windows just rattle? This weather is unbelievable. Some of the lower incoming housing is sure to have problems, and at least one landlord or tenant will sue the city for disrepair or inadequate snow removal. *sigh*

I hope Theo is all right.

February 9th, 2006 (12:44 am)

This day has gone from good, to bad, to worse.

We finished the Fitzgerald brief today after a week's worth of deliberation on some of the finer points of the article. That thing has been weighing down my desk for long enough, it's time to put it into action. Also, the judge decided to grant our motion to suppress for the tapes....it clearly has nothing to do with convicting Fitzgerald, and it is garbled at best, pure static at worst. This case is going to be messy, already the defence has filed twice to have the charges overturned on ridiculous grounds...and to make matters worse, the press is starting to get involved.

The bad, and worse, is another case that landed on my desk this morning...double homicide. Murders are never easy and no one ever gets used to them, even though we see them frequently. The defendant is a 17 year old boy...he said he caught his girlfriend cheating and beat her to death before shooting the alleged lover. Such a pathetic waste of life.

Theo came by the day before last to sleep on my couch, although he calls it 'visiting'. This 'visiting' consists of him knocking, walking in before I open the door, and then a half an hour long lecture about my wardrobe and why I do not have a girlfriend. I then tell him he sounds like our mother, and that if I wanted a lecture, I would call home. This particular time he came to tell me that his band, 'Panther Fire', finally got a job at decent, if small, club downtown. He wanted me to come and watch them, but I had to decline due to work. And his heavy metal music makes my ears hurt...

Does the clock say 1:30 am? Where does the time go..?
